Brexit and Biblical wisdom...

I wonder – in years to come, will the Referendum result be like the death of John F Kennedy or 9/11? You know – people will always remember where they were when they heard the result?

I was getting ready for a day in school when I heard the news. On the morning when some rejoiced at the prospect of throwing off the shackles of Brussels, each class I met was the same - a sea of glum faces. Some had planned to live, work or study in Europe – but perhaps not any more. At home, our resident budding research scientist desperately trawled the internet for a crumb of hope as he realised that without EU funding his career plans would be in doubt.

What is there to say at such times? It may be tempting to rerun the campaign again, but as the Old Testament Book of Proverbs reminds us, ‘the way of a fool is right in his own eyes.’ Revisiting the debate is pointless. Only time will tell who had wisdom on their side.

Tempted to promise that things will work out, somehow? The New Testament Letter of James reminds us, ‘let your ‘Yes’ be yes and your ‘No’ be no.’ It’s no use making promises that aren’t ours to keep.

Last word from Psalm 118: It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man. It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in princes. Not much has changed in two thousand years, it seems.
