St Matthew, who wrote one of the four Gospels found in the New Testament, tells us that Jesus told his followers to go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. This command is followed whenever someone is baptised, or christened. “Come and follow me!” says Jesus to his disciples in the Gospels. For many, Baptism is the beginning of a journey through life as a follower of Jesus. Or it may be the next step in a journey that has already begun. The Church of England has produced an excellent website which explains more about christenings, including information for parents, godparents, an explanation of what happens in a christening service, and lots more. You can find it at https://churchofenglandchristenings.org.
It is never too late in life to be baptised. Adults can be baptised if they were not christened as children. If you are thinking about being baptised and confirmed yourself you might like to visit https://www.churchofengland.org/weddings-baptisms-funerals/baptism.aspx which will explain more about what is involved. We hope that this journey with Jesus will continue after the Big Day!
In addition to our usual Sunday services we have a monthly Messy Church in this Benefice. Especially intended to appeal to children and families, Messy Church usually meets at St Radigund’s church in Capel le Ferne on the 2nd Saturday of each month from about 3.00 onwards, beginning with activities and finishing with tea – it’s great fun! Needless to say, if you would like to talk to someone about the possibility of baptism for yourself or someone else, or about arranging a christening, we shall be only too pleased to hear from you.
